  19.                            Welcome to PC-FasType/VGA
  20.                            =========================
  21.  
  22.           PC-FasType/VGA is a typing tutorial program SPECIFICALLY designed
  23.      for VGA quality monitors and the 101-Key Standard Keyboard sold with
  24.      computers running under the MS-DOS operating system.  The INSTALLATION
  25.      instructions below will get you up and running quickly.
  26.  
  27.      HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS:
  28.           PC-FasType/VGA is distributed on one 360KB 5.25" floppy, or one
  29.      720KB 3.50" mini-floppy and requires the following minimum equipment
  30.      to run properly:
  31.  
  32.           o  IBM AT, PS/2; any Intel 286, 386, 486 or compatible computer
  33.           o  512KB RAM (computer memory)
  34.           o  A HARD DISK with at least 800kb of available space
  35.           o  MS-DOS - Version 3.3 and higher; (MS-DOS 5.0 preferred)
  36.           o  VGA display capability
  37.           o  At least one Floppy disk drive; 3.5" or 5.25"

  41.                     ****   INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS   ****

  43.           If you downloaded PC-FasType/VGA from a BBS then all you had to
  44.      do was uncompress the files, so you can ignore this section.   If you
  45.      received PC-FasType/VGA on a disk then please read on.
  46.  
  47.           You can install PC-FasType/VGA onto a hard disk, or from one hard
  48.      disk sub-directory to another sub-directory, or even from a hard disk
  49.      to a high-capacity floppy (1.2MB or 1.44MB).  The easiest installation
  50.      is from the distribution floppy disk to a hard disk sub-directory.
  51.      This can be done by inserting the PC-FasType/VGA Shareware disk into
  52.      one of your floppy disk drives and making it the default drive.  Start
  53.      the install process by typing the following at the MS-DOS prompt:

  55.                          A>  install [d:]
  56.                                    
  57.                                    where d: is your hard disk drive or your
  58.                                    high-capacity floppy
  59.  
  60.           For example: to install PC-FasType/VGA from your floppy disk
  61.      drive A: to your hard disk drive C: - type the following commands:
  62.  
  63.                          a: <ent>            (make A: the default drive)
  64.                          install c: <ent>    (begin the install process)
  65.  
  66.  
  67.           When you select the "Install PC-FasType" menu item from the
  68.      Install menu list, the program will install PC-FasType/VGA and all its
  69.      documentation files in a sub-directory called \FASTYPE.

  71.      Other installation variations are:
  72.  
  73.           A:> install c: <ent>  -> install from A: to hard disk C:
  74.           A:> install b: <ent>  -> install PC-FasType/VGA from A: to B:
  75.           A:> install    <ent>  -> INSTALL will prompt for the drive.
  76.           B:> install a: <ent>  -> install from B: to A:
  77.           B:> install c: <ent>  -> install from B: to hard disk C:
  78.  
  79.           C:\TMP> install d: <ent>  -> install from hard disk C: to D:
  80.                          (this example assumes you've first copied the
  81.                          shareware distribution files into the sub-
  82.                          directory named \TMP on drive C:)
  83.  
  84.           Important note: PC-FasType/VGA CANNOT be installed onto 360kb
  85.      (low capacity) floppy disks.
  86.  
  87.           If you're installing onto a larger capacity floppy, then you'll
  88.      only need ONE diskette.  This includes the following: 720kb 3.5",
  89.      1.2mb 5.25", and 1.44mb 3.5" floppies.  These disks will hold ALL of
  90.      PC-FasType's uncompressed files.  You can label the high-capacity
  91.      disk as "PC-FasType Working Copy".

  93.                           HOW TO DO A "QUICK INSTALL"
  94.      ======================================================================
  95.           If you're an experienced PC user or want to get started quickly,
  96.      you can bypass the standard install program and just run the
  97.      compressed executables and specify a target drive and subdirectory.
  98.      To uncompress and load all of the files onto your hard drive, place
  99.      the distribution disk in floppy drive A: or B: and make it the default
  100.      drive, then type the following commands at the DOS prompt:

  102.                     A> ftvga10 -ec:\fastype  <ent>
  103.                     A> ftvdoc10 -ec:\fastype  <ent>
  104.  
  105.      and PC-FasType/VGA will be installed on your hard disk drive and sub-
  106.      directory named C:\FASTYPE.

  110.      TO RUN PC-FASTYPE/VGA:
  111.           Before you can run PC-FasType/VGA, it must be "installed" on
  112.      either a high-capacity floppy disk or your hard drive.  See the
  113.      INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS above for more information.

  115.           After you've installed PC-FasType/VGA, you can run the program by
  116.      simply typing FT and pressing the Enter Key <ent>.

  119.      WHAT TO DO NEXT:
  120.           PRESS ANY KEY TO GET PAST THE TITLE SCREEN AND SHAREWARE
  121.      INFORMATION SCREEN.  After these screens are displayed and the tables
  122.      loaded, the Main Menu will be displayed.  The menu selector bar will
  123.      be resting on the 'Begin Typing' selection.  Just press the Enter key
  124.      or function key F10 to start a typing drill of the HOME keys.  To
  125.      return to the Main Menu during typing,  press the Escape key.

  128.      WHAT YOU HAVE TO DO:
  129.           For DRILLS:  Place the fingers of each hand on the home keys
  130.      (ASDF JKL;) and type each letter as you are prompted for it.  The
  131.      program selects the letters randomly.  The number of characters you
  132.      have to successfully type is displayed at the top of the screen and
  133.      will count down to zero as you successfully type each character.  When
  134.      the drill is finished your WPM and other statistics will be displayed
  135.      on a typing statistics screen.

  137.           For EXERCISES:  lines of text will be displayed above the screen
  138.      keyboard; type each character pointed to by the house-shaped cursor
  139.      () and when you reach the  symbol or end of the line, press the
  140.      enter key (for "carriage-return"), or the space bar.  When you finish
  141.      typing the exercise your WPM and other statistics will be displayed.

  144.      SELECTING MENU ITEMS:
  145.           When menu's are displayed, use the arrow keys (cursor keys) to
  146.      move the menu selector bar up and down the menu.  Select the drill,
  147.      exercise, or option by pressing the enter key when the item you want
  148.      is highlighted by the menu selector bar.  You can use the function
  149.      keys as a short-cut.  In most cases, the item you select will be
  150.      check-marked.  You must ALWAYS select BEGIN TYPING or press F10 to
  151.      begin typing.

  154.      WHILE RUNNING:
  155.           MENUS:
  156.             There are five drill, exercise, and feature selection menus and
  157.             3 sub-menus for selecting additional keys to learn.  The
  158.             primary menus can be displayed by pressing function keys F1 to
  159.             F5 anytime while the screen keyboard is displayed.

  161.           <Esc>ape key:
  162.             Pressing the Escape key anytime during a drill or exercise will
  163.             cause the drill or exercise to terminate and your current WPM
  164.             to be displayed; pressing the Escape key again will display the
  165.             menu where you started the exercise.

  167.           QuickHELP:
  168.             ALL menus have the QuickHELP Facility available.  For all
  169.             menus, the function key F1 is always the HELP key.  When you
  170.             select HELP, a QuickHELP Facility  Menu will be displayed; the
  171.             selector bar will rest on the item matching your help request.
  172.             Follow the instructions given on the bottom of the menu.

  175.      EVALUATION PERIOD:
  176.           You are licensed to operate PC-FasType/VGA on your PC for testing
  177.      and evaluation as to its usefulness to you, on a trial basis for 30
  178.      days.  We believe this to be a fair and equitable time period for
  179.      evaluation and we trust your good judgement and sense of fair play in
  180.      making a decision regarding registration.

  183.      DOCUMENTATION:
  184.           The PC-FasType/VGA User Guide is included on the distribution
  185.      disk in a compressed format.  The INSTALL program will let you
  186.      uncompress and view it on-screen, or let you print it on your printer.
  187.      It's about 66 pages long, but if you register, you'll receive a
  188.      handsomely printed and bound User Guide.

  201.           Site licenses and right-to-copy licenses are available for all
  202.      organizations.  Educational institutions requesting "LAB-PACK" pricing

  207.      DATED SOFTWARE:
  208.           If today's date (the date you are reading this) is a year or more
  209.      later than the file dates on this distribution disk than please
  210.      contact Trendtech Corporation for information about a more current
  211.      version of PC-FasType/VGA.  Shareware tends to "acquire a life of its
  212.      own" once it's released; not all vendors and sysops will bother to
  213.      acquire the latest version from the author.  That is why you should
  214.      only buy or download Shareware from disk vendors or BBS's who are
  215.      authorized "Associate Members of the A.S.P."
  216.  
  217.           The "Single-User" registration fee and all site and right-to-copy
  218.      licensing fees are guaranteed through Dec. 31, 1995.  If you're
  219.      reading this file now and 1995 is history, chances are there's been a

  224.           You can only be sure of getting a top-quality virus-free version
  225.      of any ASP Shareware product by obtaining your copy directly from the
  226.      author, or from a disk vendor who is an Associate Member of the
  227.      Association of Shareware Professionals, or from a reputable BBS
  228.      service.  Be suspicious of any program you download from a BBS or of a
  229.      disk obtained from a local disk vendor, whose file dates or copyright
  230.      notices are more than two years old.  If it's a Shareware product,
  231.      contact the author directly for information about current versions.
